Inverclyde Council homelessness service leads the way in Service redesign

The successful redesign of Inverclyde’s homelessness service was nominated for six national housing awards in the later part of 2023. The program, which began in October 2022, focused on early intervention and prevention, promoting a variety of activities to prevent housing crises. Working under the new name, Inverclyde Housing Options and Homelessness Advice Service, the program combined efforts with health and social care partnership services.

Councillor Robert Moran praised the innovative approach, emphasizing the concentrated areas of deprivation in Inverclyde and the complexity of support needs. Despite not facing a significant overall homelessness issue, the area had struggled with long-term homelessness due to negative cycles of repeat homelessness, addiction, and offending.

As a result of the management focus, there has been a 58% reduction in long-term homelessness and a 27% reduction in repeat homelessness. The program has also provided accommodation solutions in partnership with private and registered social landlords, offering advice on health, budget management, employability, and more. Additionally, a Rapid Rehousing Support Team was introduced to provide intensive support and help break the cycle of homelessness, offering services such as tenancy management skills, budgeting, and advocacy. Outreach work is also provided by local dentists and opticians.
